More TV on the internet! Written by a Kid is a weekly video series on the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel.
I’d love to go on and on about how awesome Geek & Sundry is, and how awesome executive producer Felicia Day is. But I think I’d better save that for another post. For now, here’s the blurb from their press kit:
“Premium YouTube channel Geek & Sundry features the best of indie geek culture and the internet's foremost geek voices. Founded by the producers of the hit web series The Guild, Geek & Sundry offers a diverse lineup of shows that create a hub for fans of comedy, gaming, comics, music, and literature around the world. Through compelling content and its powerful social media presence, the channel cultivates a thriving community amongst its viewers, allowing them to immerse themselves in nerd culture and connect with each other both online and off. Spearheaded by prominent geek figureheads, Geek & Sundry features original content by Felicia Day (The Guild, Dr. Horrible, Eureka), Wil Wheaton (Star Trek, The Big Bang Theory), Veronica Belmont & Tom Merritt (Sword & Laser), Paul & Storm (w00tstock), and Dark Horse Comics.”
Awesome, right? Anyway, Written by a Kid is one of the seven shows currently featured on Geek & Sundry. It’s a ton of fun! Each episode, Josh Flaum & Will Bowles (co-founders of the improv comedy troupe ‘THEM’) sit down with a different kid and ask them to tell a story. Then big-deal creative types take the story and produce it; sort of like a four minute movie.
Sometimes the stories are told with live action, sometimes animation, sometimes a combination. A different team works on each story; which means you can expect a lot of stylistic variety. Some stories are linear, some are just crazy, and they often take unexpected turns or include sudden non-sequiturs. I love the surprising ideas that come from the un-inhibited imaginations of kids! There have been nine episodes as of this post, and a new one is posted every Wednesday. I have two favorite episodes so far:
Episode 1: Scary Smash
Starring Joss Whedon (Yes, starring.)
Episode 7: Kendall the Knight
But you should totally watch them all! And make sure to subscribe. This whole YouTube channel thing is a bit of a new experiment. Just like with ordinary TV, Geek & Sundry needs numbers to get funding for a second season. So subscribe, like, and share these videos to your heart’s content. I think the world can use more this kind of exuberant cute-ness!
